Directions

Fellow Researchers and Friends of Institutional Research:

Please save the date for the 2008 Annual CAIR Conference, to be held at the Hilton Pasadena Hotel from November 12-14. Pasadena is located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, just 9 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. It has long been a favorite gathering spot for CAIR professionals.

You can register at any time for CAIR 2008. Send the conference registration form and full payment in a first-class letter to the address specified in the form. If you register before September, please pay by check. After that time, payment with VISA, MasterCard, or Diners Club credit cards is accepted. Register by October 13th to take advantage of the early registration rate!

You can reserve a room at the Hilton for the conference rate of $155 per night, single or double, plus 15% tax. This room rate is available for three days before and after the conference. To guarantee the conference rate, refer to the California Association for Institutional Research (CAIR) and the group code CAIR when booking your room, and reserve by Monday, October 13th, 2008.

Please consider giving a talk, organizing a panel, or conducting a workshop at the conference! To submit a proposal, please follow the instructions on the proposal submission form (a Word document) and send as an e-mail attachment to samuel.agronow@ucop.edu. The deadline for submissions is Monday, August 18, 2008.

Segment meetings will be held on Wednesday morning. Please contact your segment representative if you have requests for topics to be covered during your segment meeting. A special workshop will be held on Wednesday afternoon from 2:00-5:00 p.m. to focus on the StudentTracker tool offered by the National Student Clearinghouse.

Thursday and Friday will feature our keynote speakers and member presentations. By popular demand, we've assembled another keynote panel to address the topic, "Using Accountability Profiles in California." Other keynote speakers – see brief bios below – will focus on budget and resource management in less-than-optimal circumstances.

The Hilton Pasadena hotel is located in the heart of Pasadena within walking distance of many interesting destinations — the trendy shops and galleries of Old Pasadena, the urban village of Paseo Colorado, Pacific Asia Museum, and Pasadena Museum of California Art. Others are easily reached through The Gold Line, Pasadena's public transit system. The links in the side bar on the right can help you plan your own side trips and evening excursions.

Conference Highlights

Pre-conference Workshop: CAIR's own Bob Cox from UCLA, who brings a wealth of experience with the StudentTracker tool, is organizing the workshop. His expertise will be supplemented by the following Clearinghouse representatives:
    - Jeff Tanner, Vice President of Higher Education Development
    - Richard Reeves, Director of Research
    - Frost Johnson, Western States Representative
    [Wednesday afternoon]

This year's keynote speakers, well versed in various aspects of our conference theme of Making Good Decisions in Challenging Times, will share their insights on issues affecting the higher education institutional research community.

  • Panel: Using Accountability Profiles in California - Panelists will describe the templates used in each segment – the politics of creating them, issues involved in implementing them, and the future of these templates in the accountability movement.
    Panelists:
    - Dennis Hengstler: University of California
    - Marsha Hirano-Nakanishi: California State University
    - Patrick Perry: California Community Colleges
    - Jonathan Brown: Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities
    [Thursday Morning]

  • Lucie Lapovsky, a past President of Mercy College and current Professor of Economics there, has almost 30 years of experience in higher education finance and resource management in higher education. Her most recent work and speaker presentations have been on cost containment, enrollment management, and tuition discounting. See, for example, her article on "Engaging the Board in Conversations About College Costs," written for the Assocation of Governing Boards.
    [Thursday Noon]

  • Larry Hershman, Vice President of Budget (Emeritus) for the UC system, spent his career wrestling with our topic of "Making Good Decisions in Challenging Times." In his 30 years of shepherding the UC systemwide budget, he engaged in numerous forays with state legislators and UC constituents over funding. From his vantage point of retirement, he offers seasoned advice and a unique perspective for CAIR members on how to respond when the dollars head south.
    Respondents:
    - California State University: Harry Hellenbrand, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at CSU-Northridge
    - California Community Colleges: Robert Turnage, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Budget for the CSU system; former Vice Chancellor for Fiscal Policy, California Community Colleges
    [Friday Morning]

  • Teri Cannon, Executive Associate Director of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, will conclude our meeting with an update on rapidly changing issues in accreditation and accountability.
    [Friday Noon]

Please contact me with any questions or comments. I look forward to seeing you in Pasadena!
